If you’re engaged, you might be wondering whether you should bring your furry friend to your engagement shoot. When it’s possible, we are huge fans of having dogs in engagement sessions – after all they are part of your family!

Including your dog is a fantastic way to really personalise your engagement shoot and can be a wonderful opportunity to have some beautiful photos taken of you both with your pet. It can also add a sense of comfort and ease for many couples who might otherwise feel camera-shy.

Here are our 5 top tips for you if you would like to include your pet in your engagement photos;

1) Discuss Including Your Pet With Your Photographer

While Ady and I personally love dogs, your photographer might have reservations or even allergies about working with your pet. Even if they are excited about having your pet in the shoot they will still need to know ahead of time so that they can prepare to ensure they get the most out of the shoot for you.

2) Pack For Your Dogs Needs

A simple one you may think, but when you are both thinking about outfits, travel to the location and the weather for the day it can be easy to forget to bring your pet essentials. So a very good idea to plan ahead and have a little bag prepared to accompany your dog to the shoot containing things like; a water dish, water, treats, a squeaky toy and of course waste bags. Your dog needs to feel safe, happy and well cared for on your shoot.

3) Check That Your Location Is Dog Friendly

Whether its your wedding venue or somewhere else special to you both that will be the location of your shoot, it is really important to check ahead that it is dog friendly. This means no surprises and you can all relax into shoot without worry.

4) Have Patience

We like to take a minute or two when we first meet your dog and let him sniff us and get to know us. Sometimes dogs (typically rescue dogs) can be a little offput by the sound of our shutter firing off. Don’t worry if we spend a little time bonding with your dog at first- once they seem calm and ready to go, we can get some great photos of them in no time. And our couples love the more candid, in-between photos featuring their dogs anyway – so just go with the flow, we promise we’ll get great photos!

5) Have fun!

One of the reasons you want your dog to be part of your engagement photos is because they’re already a part of your family. So let that connection shine! The happiness and comfort you feel together will really show in your images.
